Earn Your Leadership MBA within a Year

Executives seem to have it all together, as I witnessed them come into the large retail chain I worked in, a few years ago. I would watch the executives walk into the store all dressed in designer suits, with matching ties, and polished shoes. I spent several years with the retail establishment at a level of mid management and I soon believed the day of my being able to obtain my leadership MBA, had passed.

While working at the retail chain, one of the executives approached me to discuss the possibility of a promotion, as I listened to his proposal for a job promotion, he asked, if I would like to pursue a college degree in leadership in the area of a master of business administration degree. I told him, that I would have to work to support my family, and I wouldn't have the time to invest in my education.

He explained, in further detail about a program offered at the University of Tennessee that offered a comprehensive learning program that is completed in one year. After listening for a while, I realized that he had earned his leadership MBA, within a year at the University of Tennessee.  I decided to enroll in the University of Tennessee and begin my future in a leadership position, from that moment on.

I enrolled in the executive MBA for the strategic leadership program at the University of Tennessee, and the classes were taught by instructors who are knowledgeable of both technical and practical skills needed for leadership in today's fast paced industry.

Course Work included an opportunity to access my leadership style, and offered several enhancements to the curriculum such as, a leadership development coach that offered assistance to help the students succeed in their business environment. With the comprehensive training I received in addition to the studies, I was able to successfully obtain a promotion that offered me three times the salary I was receiving at a level of mid management.

The University of Tennessee, offered the necessary skills, I would need in order to go out into the world and be an effective leader in any area of business. My career began when I became envious of an executive assuming that I would never be able to go to school and obtain my leadership MBA like him. Now I am the executive who walks into the retail chains many locations dressed in the designer suits, and neck ties, as well as the fresh polished shoes.

When I have the opportunity to encourage others to obtain their executive degrees, I am reminded of my envy many years ago of an executive that saw potential in me, while offering the best advice I had ever received. Seeking My Accelerated MBA

When seeking an accelerated MBA, choosing the right MBA University, offers the greatest assistance, as I learned this from my experiences at the University of Tennessee, while enrolled in an accelerated program for my MBA degree. The staff at the University of Tennessee was knowledgeable and helpful, assisting me from the very beginning, during the admissions and enrollment stages. The financial aid administrator took the time to explain the student loan process, as well as the Pell grant process, prior to my enrollment.

After completing the admissions process, I could finally plan on spending seventeen months in school, after obtaining my MBA degree I would then be able to rise above the ranks at my current place of employment. UT Professional MBA Program Hosts Info Session on April 5

KNOXVILLE—Business professionals interested in earning their Master of Business Administration degree while continuing to work are invited to learn about the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s, Professional MBA program on Saturday, April 5.

The information session will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the James A. Haslam II Business Building, 1000 Volunteer Blvd. Attendees will learn about the program from Director Michael McIntyre and other faculty members and then join current students in a dynamic classroom session about accounting.

The information session is free, and pre-registration is not required. Free parking is available in the Volunteer Hall parking garage on Clinch Avenue and 16th Street, but attendees must bring their parking ticket to registration for validation.

Students in UT’s Professional MBA program participate in on-campus classes on Saturdays and online distance-learning sessions on Tuesdays for 16 months. Students also complete an Organizational Action Project, which integrates classwork with issues at the students’ current organization.

More than 60 percent of students receive promotions or new career opportunities during the program or within six months of graduating.

Questions Distinguished Honors Faculty Program member

1. How would you explain supply chain and business logistics to someone who is not familiar with the field?

We buy it, make it, move it and store it. If you ever buy something online, you see a product on the screen in front of you. We get it to you. We make sure it’s there, and you get it when we say you’re going to get it. We’re the operations.

Every company needs supply chain — banks, service organizations, institutions, government, etc. If you walk into a grocery store and wonder how all of those goods got there, we helped get them from the point of being manufactured, packaged, processed, shipped or to the store near you.

2. What interests you the most about this field?

The fact that it’s always changing and always exciting. If you watch the Amazon Prime Air video, they show a drone helicopter delivering online goods in 30 minutes or less, which is amazing. There are always opportunities to do things better, cheaper, faster. It’s very dynamic. 

3.How has the technology changed since you have been in the field?

 Technology has improved incredibly. Back when I started in business logistics, we didn’t even have computers or cellphones. You can look at today’s models and see how much technology has made an impact. Something else to take note of is that you don’t just use technology for technology’s sake. In supply chain, technology is an enabler — for quicker communications, quicker information, quicker transportation — but it doesn’t replace what we do.

4. Can you tell us about the trips you’ve planned for Scholars?

Have you ever wondered what happens after you click, “submit,” for an online shopping order? My goal for these trips is to make logistics interactive and engaging. This spring, we went to the Office Depot distribution center in Newville and we had the chance to see Kiva robot technology in action. We’ve had a day trip to the Walmart Distribution Center in Clearfield and an overnight trip to two distribution facilities in Hazelton: the United States Cold Storage (USCS) and M&M Mars distribution centers. In the fall, I’m currently looking at the possibility of a trip to a Wegman’s distribution center in Rochester, N.Y., and the Gardner’s Candy factory in Tyrone, which would be great opportunities.

Something I really like about these programs is that I get to meet students outside of this major and expose them to new knowledge and perspectives about the business industry. It’s relatable for everyone—everyone shops.

5. What do you see up next for the supply chain industry?


We wanted two-day delivery. Then it was next-day delivery. Now we have same-day delivery. What’s next is whatever the consumer demands.
